Edwin's Self Portrait

The Enhancement of Edwin
Early in his life, he’s been unsure of who he really is
Does he embrace his African  or is American side more
Which side would generate the most love from his peers
Which side would make him whole
However, he didn’t realize that both sides were needed because they both possessed a power
A type of power both can’t live without, being black

Black power births a kind of understanding that illuminates all the galaxies in their truest colors
It wasn’t until he fully realized how important that is, that he was able to grow
Faced with an uneasy background, rising to the challenge is all he’s ever known to do in life
Our country is very physical, and we must learn to play defense
Hard work and determination are traits that he’s seen his family emulate throughout time
The love he receives from them is what makes him whole, and that's why he continues to shine

It’s understood that he doesn’t need to be received by others to be himself
However, spreading love and building relationships is still a crucial part of his person
Interactionism, attaching symbolic meaning to the relationships and behaviors of others
That is what aids him in life
We can reject likeability to an extent, but no journey alone is an easy one
He believes bringing people for the ride makes everything more enjoyable

His faith in God keeps him confident
That the decisions he makes in life will bring him success in the future
If he never makes a single friend on this Earth, he’ll never be alone because God walks with him That is why he is destined for greatness
His ability to be himself instead of aiming to be different from others
That is what makes him ingenuine
It’s what will eventually place him on the platform that he will stand on one day

A life full of sports, family, and happiness is what he wants to achieve
It’s what will continue to complete his person and display his identity to everyone
However, he’ll never forget that he was once a boy from East Orange
One who was unsure of himself, as well as where he belonged in life
He is Edwin Duodu
Edwin Duodu is me

  1. This is such a strong project. I can see your connections to Coates' book clearly in this personal poem. I also see hope and focus. Great work.
